About This Treatment

What Are Trigger Point Injections?

Trigger points are tight, hyperirritable knots within muscle tissue that cause localized pain and can refer pain to distant areas. Trigger point injections (TPIs) use a small amount of lidocaine — a local anesthetic — injected directly into these knots to break the pain-spasm cycle and provide lasting relief.

TPIs are a well-established treatment in pain management and musculoskeletal medicine. They can provide relief from chronic muscle pain, tension headaches, myofascial pain syndrome, and fibromyalgia-related symptoms when other approaches have fallen short.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a trigger point injection work?+
Lidocaine is injected directly into the trigger point, interrupting the pain-spasm cycle. The muscle relaxes, blood flow improves, and pain signals are reduced.
How quickly does it work?+
Many patients feel relief during or immediately after the procedure. Some experience a brief increase in soreness for 24–48 hours before improvement.
How long does relief last?+
Results vary by individual and condition severity. Many patients experience 4–8 weeks of significant relief per session.
How many sessions will I need?+
Some patients achieve lasting relief with a single session; others benefit from a series of 3–6 injections over several weeks. Barbara will advise based on your response.
Are there side effects?+
Temporary soreness at injection sites is the most common experience. Rare side effects include bruising or temporary numbness. Serious complications are very uncommon.
